RIP Static.

Producer/Songwriter Static Passes Away
February 27th, 2008 | Author: Andreas Hale

In a sad bit of news, Stephen “Static” Garrett passed away from unknown causes in his Louisiana hometown on Monday Feb 25th 2008. Static was 1/3 of the group Playa and went on to produce and write for artists like Ginuwine (“Pony”), Nas (“You Owe Me”), Jay-Z (“Change The Game”) and the late Aaliyah (“Are You That Somebody”). He was also a part of Blackground Music and founder, Barry Hankerson, has issued a statement on the label’s behalf…

“Blackground Records and its staff and affiliate entities are deeply mourning the loss of a great talent and a great human being. It has been a pleasure to work and develop his career as a songwriter and producer. His talent was only surpassed by his loyalty and dedication,” he says. “It made me so happy to share with him the wealth of the music industry as well as one of the most personal relationships I have ever had in my 40 year career. I truly loved him, and I still do. We will now transfer our love and attention to his family during this difficult time,” adds Hankerson.

Label mate Tank also had words to say for his late friend…

"We've lost one of the great song writers of our time but more than that we've lost a son, a brother, a husband, and a father. The Blackground family has been dealt yet another blow to the heart. God is still getting us through the last one and this too shall pass. Static I love you.”

Static was in the process of finishing up his debut album titled Suppatime and the lead single “I Got My” features Lil Wayne. He also recently penned the lead single from Wayne’s album “Lollipop” and is featured in the video that was shot in Las Vegas. No word if his solo album is still coming out.

HipHopDX sends our condolences to friends and family of Static.

Kings Of Hip Hop.

Despite the previous blog, it seems that we gonna hear some Jay-Z and Nas magic soon.

There are rumors that Jay-Z and Nas are working on a collaborative album titled "The Kings Of Hip Hop", according to NY Daily News gossip columnists Rush & Molloy.

As previously reported Jigga wants to start his own record label, Carter Music Group, and the duet with Nas should be the label´s first release early next year. Jay reportedly teams up with Warner Music Group's head Lyor Cohen to form the new super label.

Jay's rep has yet to comment on the rumor.

In other news, Jay-Z, along with real estate developer Bruce Ratner and Barclays Bank, has been hit with a whopping $5 billion lawsuit.

Brooklyn activist Clive Campbell and a Brooklyn based organization known as Da Black Defense League have filed the lawsuit over slavery reparations.

No statement from Jay-Z's camp has been released.

Big Business.

JAY-Z is a Grammy-winning rapper, a club owner, a clothier, a fledgling hotelier, the part-owner of a basketball team and the former president of a record label. Now, he gets to add adman to his résumé.

Jay-Z — real name, Shawn Carter — is joining forces with another African-American entrepreneur, Steve Stoute, to open Translation Advertising in New York, an agency that will help marketers reach multicultural consumers.

The new agency will be part of Translation Consultation and Brand Imaging, which has worked for mainstream advertisers like General Motors, Hewlett-Packard, McDonald’s and Reebok.

Translation Advertising expects to announce its first clients soon, said Mr. Stoute, who sold Translation Consultation last October for an estimated $10 million to $15 million to the Interpublic Group of Companies in New York.

Interpublic, the third-largest agency company (behind the Omnicom Group and the WPP Group) also owns agencies like Campbell-Ewald, Deutsch, Draft FCB, GolinHarris, R/GA and Universal McCann. Interpublic and Translation Consultation share clients like the Chevrolet division of G.M.

Interpublic will own 49 percent of Translation Advertising. The majority stake will be owned by Mr. Stoute, 37, and Jay-Z, 38, who will be the co-chairmen.

“You know his story,” Mr. Stoute said of his new partner, who grew up in the Marcy Projects in Brooklyn. “He came from nothing and turned it into something before our eyes.”

Mr. Carter, in a telephone interview, said he considered his involvement in an agency “part of the natural growth” of his career.

“As an artist, you make music,” Mr. Carter said. “And if you see people who don’t know how to market your music, you get involved in it.”

Otherwise, what you want to accomplish “gets lost in translation,” he added, “no pun intended.”
